H107 profit should be flat, but higher than consensus expects. PetroChina's H107 operating data indicates sluggish growth in crude oil production volume (0.6% YoY), but a significant increase in the price of refining products (2.4% rise in gasoline and 9.9% for diesel on a YoY basis). We believe higher refined product prices in H107 would help offset the increase in windfall profit tax in Q107 (about Rmb5bn) and at least a 20% increase in E&P costs YoY. Our estimate for H107 EPS is Rmb0.45/share.
Refined product price to help refining breakeven in H107
Because the Chinese government increased refined product prices in May and July last year, PetroChina’s refined product prices recorded strong growth YoY in H107. Coupled with a lower crude procurement cost (85% of crude for refining is from its own E&P), the refining excluding market should be able to breakeven, in our opinion. |

The 3G industry, once hailed as a big pie, seems more like a trap, at least in the current context. Statistics shows that globally, 3G subscribers are less than 10% of 2G subscribers and more than 70% of mobile subscribers continue to use GSM.
The disappointingly slow growth of 3G market substantially changed the global landscape of telecommunication equipment: Ericsson continues to maintain its dominance in the wireless equipment market amid mounting pressure, Nokia-Siemens and Alcatel-Lucent are struggling with post-merger integration. Nortel and Motorola have to find other ways out after being marginalized, Huawei and ZTE, two Chinese equipment manufacturers, are now wielding their power around.
The transitional period between 2G and 3G lends opportunities for Huawei and ZTE to rechart the territory. When the global 3G market is evolving, the industrial landscape of telecommunication equipment has been altered quietly.
